Confirmation, reaffirmation and a big fish!

On Sunday, Jamie and I had an amazing experience together being confirmed and reaffirmed at our church, St. Luke's. It was a truly Holy Spirit filled experience. Here are our 'after photos' when we returned home to Jamie's house and were reminiscing on the experience. Then, by the Grace of God, yesterday, Wednesday, Jamie and Rex went out and caught several big fish...four cobia, "Brownies," of which two they brought home (they won the battle) and two went free (the fish won and got to go reproduce more fish.)...Praise the Lord for His BIG blessings! Amen.

Read Colossians

I might be starting a new study with some girlfriends on the book of Colossians. I just re-read it this morning and what great treasure it is for understanding truth. Paul, who wrote Colossians as a letter to the new church east of Ephesus, refutes many heresies that were building in the early church at the time (i.e., denouncing the deity of Christ) and he pronounces the fundamental supremacy of Christ in all things. The whole book is excellent and foundational and uplifting. It is also good for spiritual warfare---to know the Truth!

Colossians 2
1I want you to know how much I am struggling for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not met me personally. 2My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, 3in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. 4I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments. 5For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how orderly you are and how firm your faith in Christ is.

6So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, 7rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.
8See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.
9For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority. 11In him you were also circumcised, in the putting off of the sinful nature, not with a circumcision done by the hands of men but with the circumcision done by Christ, 12having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.
13When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. 15And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

16Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ. 18Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you for the prize. Such a person goes into great detail about what he has seen, and his unspiritual mind puffs him up with idle notions. 19He has lost connection with the Head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.

20Since you died with Christ to the basic principles of this world, why, as though you still belonged to it, do you submit to its rules: 21"Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!"? 22These are all destined to perish with use, because they are based on human commands and teachings. 23Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.

Fishing in the rain...

Yesterday Jamie and I headed out at about noon to go for an afternoon of "easy" fishing. "Easy" because we didn't get up at the crack of dawn to get out on the water. We didn't have any bait and were praying that the Lord would provide, literally. (At least I was praying that it was His will that we find bait.) Anyhoo...we searched and searched for the "poagies" but to no avail. We took the boat east and west in the Port Royal sound along Dolphin Head but didn't see any signs of bait (little fish heads flickering on the water's surface or Pelicans diving for a gulp.) So, we gave up and decided to head to Christmas Tree and fish for "greenies." Well, on the way, and as the clouds began to really build in the sky, we spotted another fisherman pulling in his nets along a "rip" and in Jamie's words, "Glad he showed us that." Meaning, there was bait there and God had provided.

Well, God had a sense of humor because after we hit the rip and Jamie threw a bunch of casts and hauled in some nice bait (Blue Fish, Whiting, Greenies, and a trout) a huge thunder clapped around our heads and I jumped up in a scream. We saw lightning flash in the distance and rain began puring all around. Well...you know the story if you were on Hilton Head yesterday...the rain didn't let up and it rained all the way until today (Monday). Suffice to say, we were reluctant to go in (except when I saw the lightning, I was pretty ready) and sadly the great bait we had just caught was going to be left for naught. With a little distress, we made our way back to the dock, sat a while to see of the storm would pass, and knowing it wouldn't, we gave in. God made us rest. Jamie tossed the bait to all the Blue Herons and White Egrets that had gathered on the dock to hang with us and we were entertained and marveled to see them fighting for the fish. Jamie cleaned the boat and our adventure was done.

A great day.....thank you Lord.

Trust in the Lord

Proverbs 3:5
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your path straight."

From the surfer's devotional this morning...
We spend way too much time trying to scheme and manipulate situations that God has already given us clear direction on. We often do this because we desire what is best for us and are unsure whether God is as committed to that same outcome as we are. The basic problem is that, as broken creatures, we don’t know what’s best for us. But God does and He desires what will bring Him glory and will be the best for you. History bares this out. Just look at the cross. It may not make sense to the “world” but it does make sense in God’s economy. So trust and don’t second guess Him. Just obey.

Excellent talk on prayer

On today's Moody radio broadcast, "Today in the Word," which is on at 7:30am on 88.7 here locally, there was an excellent speaker, Warren Wiersbe, talking about prayer. He's an oldie but goodie, a great expositor and teacher. Click the link below and the "Listen Now" button to hear it...it is good solid foundational teaching on prayer that everyone should know/understand.

vanquished

Revelation 21:1-4
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." --Amen

James 5
13Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. 14Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. 16Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

In time of need

Hebrews 4:16
16Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
